Making clean energy cheap

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Clean Energy is CheapBefore the global economic crisis energy prices for most people were steadily increasing due to the shrinking supply and an increase in demand for fossil fuels. Electric bills in coal dependent states were skyrocketing and gas-station attendants were running out of number signs to display the record-breaking prices. Among this dire economic situation, the least hit communities were those powered by clean, renewable energy and those driving fuel efficient cars. The economic crisis put a temporary halt to the increase in prices, but as it lifts back up from the torrid state it’s in, we need a plan to move ourselves away from fossil fuels altogether and drastically reduce our overall energy use.

Fortunately President Obama’s budget lays the groundwork to do just that.

Future of Federal Student Loans

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

President Obama’s 2010 budget proposal contained a bold new proposal to switch away from the unreliable, wasteful, and corrupt Federal Family Education Loan Program to the cheaper and more stable Direct Loan Program.

These two loan systems provide the same federal loans for students, but using only the DLP, where the government loans directly to students rather than garunteeing loans made by private companies against default, will save an estimated $94 billion over ten years. These funds can be used to increase need-based student aid.

Pass a Progressive Budget for 2010

President Obama’s budget proposal for 2010 was recently released to Congress. The budget is an economic blueprint for America, and provides the opportunity to lay a strong foundation for rebuilding our future from the bottom up.

Specifically, Obama’s budget proposal will create clean energy investments and green jobs under a cap and trade policy, reform the financial aid system to make college affordable and accessible, and provide quality health care now. The House of Representatives and Senate are going to begin working on a final budget resolution in Conference after April Recess.

With so many special interest groups and conservatives of both parties opposed to the progressive provisions in the budget proposal, we need your help to make sure Congress supports bold investments that will make a difference in the lives of this and future generations. We need to remind our representatives that they are there to protect our future, not oppose it. Send an email urging Congress to support the progressive proposals in the President’s budget today!
